About Washington Humane Society
The Washington Humane Society offers pet adoptions to Pets for Patriots member Patriots in the Washington, DC metro area and will assist them in selecting their new best friend. Founded in 1870 as the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, the Washington Humane Society is committed to animal welfare, cruelty prevention and responsible pet ownership.
The organization offers a wide range of programs including adoption, sheltering, spay and neuter, lost and found, human-animal therapy and humane education. The organization works closely with domestic violence service providers and proves a safe haven to animals in domestic abuse situations.
The Washington Humane Society’s Dog Tags program is one example of the organization’s unique approach to fostering the human-animal bond. This three-tier program brings together wounded soldiers recovering at neighboring Walter Reed Army Medical Center with homeless shelter dogs. Not only are the animals properly trained and socialized, making them more adoptable, but the veterans participate in a valuable certificate-based educational curriculum that enables them to pursue a career in animal welfare, care and training.
To help reduce pet overpopulation and foster responsible pet ownership, the Washington Humane Society operates a low-cost spay/neuter center and walk-in vaccination clinic, both open to the public.
Adoption fees include:
Heartworm test (dogs), FIV/feline leukemia (cats)
Rabies and other species-appropriate vaccinations
