Patriot interview: Star and Lucky

Background:

Star is an Army veteran who served in Iraq and is currently living in Maryland. In September 2013 she honorably adopted Lucky, a then four year-old Black lab mix (owner surrender) through our partnership with Prince George's County Animal Management Division.

Interview should cover:

  • Brief background of military experience: when/why entered the military, any memorable moments/events
  • Prior experience having a pet; why member decided to adopt a pet at this time
  • Why member decided to adopt through Pets for Patriots
  • Why member chose his/her pet in particular
  • How the pet has helped him/her
  • Member's experience with Pets for Patriots
  • What s/he would say to another veteran who is considering adopting a companion pet
  • If s/he is using our local veterinary partner: anything to add about experiences with them
  • Anything else that naturally arises through the course of the interview

I was in the Army for almost ten years before being medically retired May of this year. I was proud of my achievements during my time in and my travels but it took a toll on me physically and mentally. I was diagnosed with Anxiety, PTSD, Depression and Bipolar and felt like "Well, I am out now but what do I do"? I felt like I was going crazy then I found out about Pets For Patriots. I found the perfect dog, Lucky, at the shelter not to far from me and it was "puppy love" at first sight. Since having Lucky in our home he saved me from sleepless nights, worry, fear, and stress. I have a friend to feel safe with. The biggest thing of all....I have my hope back. 

Some background info: I am 33, married for 4 years with a combination of three sons and a stepdaughter. I have been deployed to Iraq and Indonesia and have been stationed at numerous bases from Fort Drum, NY to the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
